Antoine Bourdelle's poster for the 1925 Exposition of Decorative and Industrial Arts is one of the four posters selected to promote the event (the other three posters were created by Charles Loupot, André Girard, and Robert Bonfils).
Bourdelle chose to highlight the labor and ingenuity of men who worked for innovation in the decorative and industrial arts of the 1920s. For this, he references one of the twelve labors of Hercules, namely "Capturing the Cretan Bull." The character who brings the bull to the ground carries a bow and arrows.
The 1925 International Exposition of Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris was a major event that marked the emergence of Art Deco as the dominant style in architecture, design, applied arts, and fine arts. With its geometric lines, elegant forms, and use of modern materials, Art Deco captured the public's imagination and exerted a lasting influence on 20th-century design.
Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) was a major French sculptor of the early 20th century. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse before becoming a student of Auguste Rodin in Paris. Bourdelle developed an expressive and monumental style influenced by both classical and modern forms. His famous sculptures include "Héraklès Archer" and "La Guerre." In addition to his artistic work, Bourdelle taught and founded his own studio, counting among his students renowned artists such as Alberto Giacometti.
