Graphic Poster for the Pensylvania Festival of the Arts by Lanny Sommese

About the Item

Born in East Moline, Illinois in 1943, Lanny Sommese has been a member of the Penn State University faculty since 1970 and was an Emeritus Professor of Graphic Design. He is a graduate of the University of Florida where he received a BFA in painting and a Bachelor of Design Degree. He earned the MFA in Graphic Design at the University of Illinois Sommese’s work has been included in important exhibitions all-over the world. His work was awarded the Taiwan International Graphic Design Award and Gold Medals in the Triennial of Stage Poster Sofia, the Colorado Poster Biennial, the Poster Biennial of Bolivia, the "To Be Human" poster competition at the Danish Poster Museum, and the International Biennial of the Poster of Mexico, where he also won the Jose Guadalupe Posada Medal for best poster in the show. Sommese’s posters are included in numerous important collections worldwide, including the Library of Congress National Poster Collection, which has more than 100 of Sommese’s posters in its collection. More than four decades ago, Lanny Sommese was tapped to design the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts poster. The retired graphic design professor has been doing it ever since. And when people asked him when from he is pulling his inspiration from? He answered: The arts festival is an event full of celebration and activity. I draw my inspiration from many aspects of everyday life that surround the festival and try to create visual metaphors that capture this. Sometimes I drew inspiration from my children when they were little.

Wear consistent with age and use. Very good original condition except for a damp patch on the right bottom that you can see in the 3rd picture. Not visible overall. New frame in oak.
