About the Item
Howard Arkley (5 May 1951 – 22 July 1999 was a prominent Australian artist who painted in the medium of spray paint. His paintings of suburban houses in Melbourne’s outer East put him on the map of as one of Australia’s most innovative contemporary artists.
As well as suburban houses, one of the most famous portraits he ever produced was of the Australian punk singer, Nick Cave. Arkley was heavily influenced by the Melbourne punk-rock scene of the early 1980’s, and Nick Cave was a central figure during that period. Cave is forever immortalised in Arkley’s portrait, ‘Nick Cave’, 1999
