About the Item

Jean Dubuffet Silkscreen Serigraph Abstract Exhibition Poster This original vintage poster is a rare piece. It was created for an exhibition of Jean Dubuffet's work at the BC Holland Gallery in Chicago in April 1976. This piece is housed in its original black metal frame. It is in very good original vintage condition, with no damage to the frame or glass. Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was a French painter and sculptor. Though he received art training as a youth, it was not until 1942 that he began the work which has distinguished him as an outstanding innovator in postwar European painting. Dubuffet looked to the margins of the everyday—the art of incarcerated and institutionalized people, mediums, and isolated provincials—to liberate his own creativity, coining the term “Art Brut” as a reflection of the creative possibilities outside the conventions of the day. His paintings from the early forties in brightly colored oils were soon followed by works in which he employed such unorthodox materials as cement, plaster, tar, and asphalt-scraped, carved and cut and drawn upon with a rudimentary, spontaneous line. In his own art, Dubuffet constantly innovated. His famous Phenomena series—a set of 362 lithographs—was made with natural and industrial materials and recalls cosmic forms and microscopic elements. Dubuffet’s prolific experimentation and instinct-driven approach positioned him as a groundbreaking force in 20th century art, pushing boundaries across multiple mediums and redefining artistic expression. Measurements are as follows: Framed Piece - 23" W x 31" H x 1" D
