It highlights the partnership between the French West Railways and the London-Brithon and South Coast line ("London, Brighton and South Coast Railway" (LB&SCR)).
The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway was formed in 1846. In 1923 it became part of the Southern Railway.
The Western Railway Company was founded in 1855 as a result of the merger of several small regional railway companies. It operated a network of railway lines that linked Paris to many important destinations such as Le Havre, Cherbourg, Rouen, Caen, Rennes, Brest, Nantes, etc...
In 1904, the train journey between Paris and London was a very different adventure from the one we know today with the Eurostar and the Channel Tunnel. At this time there was no direct Channel Tunnel, which meant that the journey involved changing trains and using boats to cross the Channel.
The trip started at the Gare du Nord in Paris. Travelers would take a train to Calais, a port city on the northern coast of France. In Calais, travelers had to take a ferry to cross the English Channel and reach the south coast of England. Once in England (usually Dover), travelers took another train to London.
Arsène Naulez stages a young woman who sells flowers on a London bridge with her back to the Big Ben tower and the British Parliament. Boats sail on the Thames, and Westminster Abbey can be seen in the background of the poster.
