Highly collectible contemporary lithograph art poster of "Trafalgar Square" by Piet Mondrian, circa 1991. The poster, which is a reproduction of Mondrian's geometric masterpiece, is presented in a simple gold wood frame and measures 33.25" x 43.5". The piece is from the Museum of Modern Art collection. and makes a wonderful presentation piece! #2995
In September 1938 Mondrian moved from Paris to London to escape the threat of a German invasion. There he made Trafalgar Square, the first in a series of paintings titled after locations in cities that gave him refuge during World War II. The small, subtly textured planes of primary colors that seem to vibrate within their black perimeters are smaller and their arrangement more syncopated than in many of the artists earlier canvases: color segments expand across two rectangular fields in the larger black grid, and thickened blocks of black function as both line and plane (at lower right, for example). The date "39–43" inscribed on the original canvas stretcher suggests that Mondrian revisited this painting after his flight to New York in 1940 to escape the escalating war.
Posters as an art form were invented by Jules Chéret in Paris in the 1860’s. Their proliferation and refinement were the result of advances in printing technology, a relaxation of laws regulating the press, and a booming demand for the advertisement of ‘modern’ products and of the Parisian lifestyle in the Belle Epoque (1871 – 1914). In journals, books, theater programs, and posters, the graphic arts soon transcended their commercial function and became art objects sought out by art collectors worldwide.

Piet Mondrian
Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was a Dutch painter and theoretician, a pioneer of 20th-century abstract art. He transitioned from figurative painting to a minimalist, geometric style, focusing on primary colors (red, blue, yellow), black, white, gray, and horizontal and vertical lines. His art, rooted in nature, sought universal values and aesthetics. Mondrian was a key figure in the De Stijl movement and his work influenced major art styles like Color Field painting, Abstract Expressionism, and Minimalism, as well as design, architecture, and fashion. Design historian Stephen Bayley described Mondrian as a totem of Modernism.
