Plate VI" Description: This 19th-century ornithological print, intended as a scientific reference, features a variety of land birds from the order Piciformes. Each bird is precisely illustrated and colored, capturing the naturalistic detail characteristic of the era's natural history artistry. The print serves as an educational tool, with each species meticulously labeled with both common and Latin names for accurate identification: 1. G. Bucco (Barbet) - Curucui, RED BILLED C. 2. G. YUNX (Wryneck) - S.J. Torquilla var., BLACK SPOTTED R. 3. G. PICUS (Woodpecker) - F.P. Virginiana var., PILATED W. – CAROLINA W. 4. G. SITTA (Nuthatch) - T.S. Europæa, SPECKLED N. Publication Information: Published on January 1, 1811, by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme Brown, Paternoster Row, as directed by the Act, the print is part of Rees' 'The Cyclopaedia, or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature'. The work was significant for its comprehensive coverage of knowledge and was published in serialized form from 1802 to 1820, comprising 39 volumes of text, 5 volumes of plates, and an atlas. The print was engraved by Milton after drawings by Sydenham Teast Edwards, ensuring high-quality reproduction and enduring educational value.
