About the Item
18th Century Anatomical Male Figure Reaching Upward German Engraving c1745
This striking 18th-century anatomical engraving depicts a full-length male nude captured in an expressive, forward-moving stance, with one arm raised high above the head and the body stretched in a powerful diagonal line. The figure’s weight is shifted onto the rear leg, while the front leg extends forward, creating a sense of motion, tension, and anatomical complexity that is central to academic figure studies of the period.
The print originates from a German edition dating to circa 1745, produced after the influential designs of Gérard de Lairesse (1641–1711). De Lairesse’s anatomical models were foundational to European art education, emphasizing idealized classical proportion, musculature, and balance rather than medical dissection. These engravings were used extensively by painters and sculptors as studio reference works throughout the 18th century.
The engraver employs precise line engraving and dense cross-hatching to articulate musculature across the torso, thighs, and extended arm. The elongated pose allows for a detailed study of muscle stretch and contraction, particularly in the abdominal region, shoulders, and calves. Subtle remnants of drapery trail behind the figure, reinforcing classical references while adding visual rhythm to the composition.
This plate is especially compelling for its sense of upward movement and expressive reach, making it one of the more dynamic poses within such anatomical series. It appeals equally to collectors of Old Master prints, academic art, and classical anatomy, as well as to interior designers seeking intellectually engaging works with strong sculptural presence.
