About the Item
18th Century Anatomical Male Figure Study with Raised Arm German Engraving c1745
This refined academic engraving presents a standing male nude shown in a dynamic contrapposto pose, with one arm raised upward and the opposite hand resting on a shovel used as a stabilizing prop. One foot is elevated on a block, allowing for a complex yet balanced study of posture, muscle tension, and proportion. The composition emphasizes the torso, abdominal structure, legs, and extended arm, making it an exemplary demonstration of classical anatomical principles.
The print originates from a German edition published around 1745, after the designs and teachings of Gérard de Lairesse (1641–1711). De Lairesse’s influence on academic figure drawing was profound, and his anatomy plates were widely used throughout Europe as instructional models for painters, sculptors, and draftsmen. Unlike medical illustrations, these plates focus on idealized anatomy, proportion, and artistic harmony rather than dissection.
The engraver employs crisp, confident line work and dense cross-hatching to articulate musculature and volume. The subtle drapery remnants around the figure soften the composition while reinforcing classical references. The shovel, recurring throughout this series, functions both as a compositional element and as a teaching device for balance and bodily mechanics.
This plate stands out for its upward-reaching gesture, which creates a sense of aspiration and movement uncommon in more static anatomical studies. It is highly appealing to collectors of Old Master prints, academic art, and classical anatomy, as well as to interior designers seeking intellectually engaging wall pieces with strong visual presence.
