About the Item

18th Century French Ceiling Design – Rococo Floral and Architectural Ornament, Plate LXXXVII This exuberant chromolithograph, Plate LXXXVII from *L'Ornement Polychrome*, showcases a stunning example of 18th-century French Rococo ceiling decoration. Bursting with ornamental vitality, it captures the lightness, elegance, and refined extravagance that defined interior design during the reign of Louis XV. Rich in architectural detail and floral abundance, this design represents the decorative peak of the Rococo era. The print presents a highly decorative ceiling corner layout composed of sculptural scrollwork, garlands of roses, festoons, and ornamental shields, all rendered in vivid tones of gold, rose pink, sky blue, turquoise, crimson, and jade green. A large coffered dome in the upper left, with a central blue rosette surrounded by garlands, suggests the centerpiece of a grand salon or reception room ceiling. Intricate floral borders frame the entire composition, reinforcing the Rococo fondness for continuous, flowing design. The asymmetrical arrangement of curved moldings and shell motifs is characteristically Rococo, conveying a sense of playful sophistication and fluidity. Decorative vignettes with coats of arms, acanthus leaves, floral sprays, and stylized lattice patterns contribute to the three-dimensional richness of the composition. These designs would have been executed in stucco, carved wood, or painted panels in luxurious 18th-century interiors. This plate was lithographed by Lassalle and printed by Firmin-Didot in Paris around 1869, under the direction of Auguste Racinet. His *L'Ornement Polychrome* was one of the most influential pattern books of the 19th century, celebrating ornamental traditions from antiquity through the modern era and inspiring countless decorators, architects, and artisans. A quintessential example of Rococo design exuberance, this print is ideal for those interested in historical interiors, French decorative arts, or ornamental ceiling composition. Condition: Excellent. Brilliant, unfaded colors with no damage or repairs. Clean margins and crisp impression. Minor age toning to the edges only. Heavy, stable paper with strong chromolithographic layering. Framing tips: A rococo-style gilt frame or curved antique wood frame would enhance the elegance of the composition. Use a pale pink or cream mat to bring out the pastel tones and floral accents. Perfect for classical, romantic, or French-inspired interior settings. These highly detailed and colorful designs reflect the height of Baroque decorative art, combining allegory, heraldry, floral ornament, and architectural grandeur.
