About the Item

18th Century Pair of Sea Shell Prints, from Lamarck, 1790, engraved prints of seashells from the Histoire Naturelle, the Conchology volume featuring Coquilles Univalves - in particular Natice, Natica (Moon Snails) and Porcelaine, Cypraea (Cowries). These are beautiful black and white zoological plates with fine detail and delicate shading. The prints have been conservation matted and framed, and remain in excellent condition. Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, chevalier de Lamarck, often known simply as Lamarck, was a French naturalist, biologist, academic, and soldier. He was an early proponent of the idea that biological evolution occurred and proceeded in accordance with natural laws. An immensely important scientist, he was the first to use the term "biology" in its modern senses, coined the term "invertebrates," remains a giant in the field of Malacology (the study of Molluscs), and was the first to formulate a comprehensive concept of biological evolution.
