About the Item
18th Century Rococo Cartouches and Decorative Frames – French Ornament, Plate XCIII
This lively chromolithograph, Plate XCIII from *L'Ornement Polychrome*, presents an exuberant collection of 18th-century French cartouches, emblematic of the Rococo style at its most expressive. These ornamental frames, scrolls, and decorative panels were originally used for wall decoration, mirror surrounds, ceiling medallions, and architectural details during the reign of Louis XV.
The print features a diverse range of cartouches—some elaborate, others playful—adorned with rocaille shells, acanthus leaves, floral garlands, birds, mythological heads, and whimsical masks. Central to the composition is a vibrant pastoral vignette of a shepherd and muse surrounded by busts, scrolls, and emblems of art and music, highlighting the Rococo love for idyllic, theatrical imagery.
Other cartouches display blank spaces, intended to frame painted scenes, monograms, or coats of arms. Notable variations include:
– A shell-framed cartouche sprouting palm leaves and coral, suggesting maritime themes.
– A symmetrical double-scroll frame with a crowned motif and cherubic mask.
– Baroque-fantastic compositions involving horns, goats, and lion heads.
The abundance of color—ranging from soft pinks and greens to cobalt, vermilion, and gold—emphasizes the movement, asymmetry, and fantasy that defined Rococo ornament. These designs exemplify both the formal elegance and whimsical flair characteristic of mid-18th-century French decorative arts.
This plate was lithographed by Launay and printed by Firmin-Didot in Paris around 1869. It formed part of Auguste Racinet’s monumental *L'Ornement Polychrome*, which catalogued historic styles from antiquity to the 19th century and became an essential reference for designers, restorers, and artists across Europe.
Ideal for enthusiasts of historical decoration, costume design, or Rococo architecture, this plate offers endless inspiration from one of the most charming eras in ornament history.
