About the Item

18th Century Rococo Ceiling and Panel Decoration – French Floral Scrolls, Plate LXXXVIII This vibrant chromolithograph, Plate LXXXVIII from L'Ornement Polychrome, features a selection of exuberant Rococo decorative motifs from 18th-century France. These highly ornate and colorful designs were typical of ceiling corners, friezes, and panel insets in aristocratic interiors under the reign of Louis XV, showcasing the full flourish of the Rococo aesthetic. The upper part of the plate presents two horizontal friezes bursting with asymmetrical scrollwork, shell motifs, garlands of roses, and stylized fountains. The compositions feature pastel tones of turquoise, salmon pink, lavender, and light blue set against warm ochre backgrounds, punctuated by floral festoons and delicate latticework. These designs likely adorned the cornices or transitional moldings between ceiling and wall in Rococo salons. Beneath, four highly ornamental corner motifs are displayed, each a riot of color and detail. They incorporate spiraling acanthus leaves, floral sprays, ornamental shells, fan shapes, and exotic blossoms, some set against chocolate-brown grounds to enhance contrast. The symmetry is softened by the organic flow of foliage, curving volutes, and petal bursts, giving these panels a light, airy, and playful feel—typical of Rococo elegance and fantasy. Lithographed by Bauer and published by Firmin-Didot in Paris around 1869, this print formed part of Auguste Racinet’s celebrated *L'Ornement Polychrome*, a compendium of global decorative styles intended to inspire 19th-century artists, decorators, and architects. A joyful and richly detailed artifact of decorative history, this plate is an outstanding example of French ornamental sophistication and ideal for use as a reference in restoration, textile design, or classical interior projects. Condition: Excellent condition. Crisp impression and vivid color retention with no fading. Margins clean and intact. No tears, foxing, or repairs. 17th Century Decorative Ceiling and Panel Motifs – French Baroque Design, Plate LXXXI This richly ornamental chromolithograph, Plate LXXXI from *L'Ornement Polychrome*, presents an exquisite variety of 17th-century French ceiling and wall decoration. These highly detailed and colorful designs reflect the height of Baroque decorative art, combining allegory, heraldry, floral ornament, and architectural grandeur. Originally created for elite interiors under the reign of Louis XIV, such patterns would have adorned ceilings, overdoor panels, and boiseries in palaces, salons, and academic institutions. The main image at the top features a ceiling panel of striking complexity and elegance. A central medallion bearing a crown over crossed scepters sits against a black background with lavish floral scrolls in pink, turquoise, and gold. Surrounding it are octagonal medallions showing miniature landscapes and natural motifs, such as birds and shells, adding a narrative and symbolic richness to the decorative field. The borders are adorned with curling acanthus, floral garlands, and Rococo-esque volutes. Below, additional panels offer variations of allegorical and mythological wall designs.
