About the Item
Title: Exquisite 19th-Century Engravings of Rodents and Small Mammals by Dutch Naturalists
Description:
This finely detailed engraving originates from a 19th-century zoological work, likely part of a broader scientific atlas produced by Dutch naturalists dedicated to cataloging the animal kingdom. The print features various species of rodents and small mammals, meticulously rendered in lithographic detail. Each animal is labeled with its Dutch name, emphasizing the scholarly approach taken during this period to document wildlife. The plate is a fine example of scientific illustration, balancing artistic finesse with anatomical accuracy, making it both an informative and visually appealing piece.
Such prints were commonly found in encyclopedic works from the mid-to-late 19th century, used to illustrate evolving scientific knowledge. The precise shading and intricate linework highlight the care taken in rendering fur textures and proportions, making these engravings valuable to collectors of natural history art. Subjects in this print include various species of mice, voles, hamsters, lemmings, and the nutria (Coypus), showcasing their characteristic postures and anatomical distinctions. Keywords: zoological print, antique engraving, natural history, rodents, scientific illustration, 19th century, Dutch naturalists, lithograph, rare book plate, animal studies.
Condition Summary:
This print remains in good condition considering its age. The paper has minor discoloration and some foxing along the margins, which is typical for works of this period. The edges show slight wear, and the plate impression remains strong with excellent image clarity. The ink has retained its depth, allowing for fine details to remain crisp. No significant damage or tears are present, making it a well-preserved example suitable for display or collection.
Framing Tips:
To best showcase this engraving, a conservation-grade mat and UV-protective glass are recommended to prevent further aging. A neutral-colored mat will complement the monochromatic engraving while drawing focus to the detailed imagery. Floating the print within the frame can also enhance its antique appeal, emphasizing the deckled edges if they are intact. If pairing with other similar engravings, consider a gallery-style arrangement to create a striking visual set, maintaining consistent frame styles for a cohesive look.

Hand-Colored Antique Illustrations of Various Rodent-like Animals, circa 1820
Located in Langweer, NL
Original antique print of mouse species / mice and other rodents. This engraved print originates from a very rare unknown Dutch work. The plates are similar to the plates in the famous German work: ‘Bilderbuch fur Kinder' by F.J. Bertuch, published 1790-1830 in Weimar. This could be Dutch edition of this work (no references found), or a work that used the Bertuch plates. Published circa 1820.
This engraving described in more detail:
The print features six illustrations of various rodent-like animals. They are not all mice; they represent a range of rodent species, which can be inferred from their different physical characteristics:
1. The largest animal at the top left looks like a type of pika or a chinchilla due to its rounded ears and body shape.
2. The second illustration on the top right is a curled-up animal, which might be a dormouse based on its compact body and fur texture.
3. The animal at the center-right with prominent ears and elongated body could be a type of rat or a gerbil.
4. The creature in the middle left with large hind legs and long ears appears to be a jerboa, which is known for its distinctive jumping movement.
5. The bottom left animal resembles a vole...
