About the Item
19th-Century Hand-Coloured Knights Jousting in Ornate Black Caparisons
This splendid original hand-coloured lithograph, created in 1842, captures the elegance, drama, and artistry of a medieval jousting tournament. It comes from the esteemed publication *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, produced in Stuttgart by Carl Hoffmann. Directed by artist Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and enriched by the scholarship of Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, the work aimed to bring the splendor of chivalric traditions to a 19th-century audience.
In this particular image, two armored knights confront each other at full tilt, their long lances aimed and poised for impact. Both riders are mounted on horses dressed in exceptional black caparisons, adorned with intricate silver patterns and bold color accents. One horse proudly displays vertical strips of red, blue, white, and yellow, while the other’s ornate silver arabesques and subtle highlights evoke a sense of noble refinement. The knights’ helmets are crested with striking plumes, and their polished armor reflects their skill, rank, and the intensity of the joust.
The hand-applied coloration has been meticulously preserved, retaining a remarkable richness of hue. Despite its age, the lithograph remains in very good condition, showing only minor toning and gentle folding along the center. These small signs of historical authenticity do not detract from the image’s clarity or visual impact.
This rare piece is perfect for collectors of medieval and Renaissance art, historical costume, or equestrian imagery. It provides a tangible link to the world of chivalry, pageantry, and knightly valor, making it an exceptional addition to any curated collection or refined display space.
