1950s abstract Expressionism Woodblock print on handmade paper
Gorgeous, graphic early work from Grippi. Experimentation with woodblock printing on handmade paper, inspired by the Japanese tradition and the 'primitivism' 'tribal' aesthetic that served as a gateway to pure abstraction of the 1950s and 'abstract expressionism' as it came to be known. Pollock was similarly fascinated by the remnants of cubism and the 'primitive' aesthetic that also included scrawl like characters and symbols. Extremely delicate work because of size and make of paper. A bit thicker than tissue but soft, almost like a linen-lace hybrid.
