About the Item

Acts of the Apostles – Six Biblical Scenes, Pieter Mortier Engravings, Amsterdam c.1700 This rare set of three large copper engravings, each containing two biblical scenes, was published in Amsterdam around 1700 by Pieter Mortier. Together the six scenes form a dramatic and coherent visual cycle illustrating key moments from the Acts of the Apostles and the early history of Christianity. Executed with strong theatrical composition, classical architecture, and expressive figure groups, the engravings reflect Mortier’s role in bringing large-scale narrative imagery to an international audience at the turn of the eighteenth century. These authentic antique engravings—never reproductions—are offered unframed, inviting custom framing that enhances their character and allows them to harmonise beautifully with individual interiors and design palettes. Plate I – Upper scene Apostles and followers gather outside a monumental city gate, listening attentively to inspired preaching. The elevated architecture and distant crowds emphasize the rapid spread of Christian teaching, while the calm yet authoritative gestures of the central figures convey moral conviction and spiritual authority. Plate I – Lower scene A violent confrontation unfolds as believers are attacked and dragged to the ground. Figures recoil, fall, and plead amid architectural columns, capturing the chaos and brutality of early persecutions. The strong contrasts of light and shadow heighten the emotional tension of the scene. Plate II – Upper scene The sick are brought into the streets to be healed by the apostles. The composition centers on compassion and hope: afflicted figures recline or kneel while others gesture toward the apostles, whose presence signifies divine intervention and miraculous recovery. Plate II – Lower scene The martyrdom of Saint Stephen. Stones are raised and hurled as Stephen collapses, surrounded by enraged persecutors. The violent movement of the attackers contrasts sharply with the spiritual resignation of the martyr, underscoring the cost of faith in the early Church. Plate III – Upper scene The descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Apostles and followers kneel and raise their hands as divine light pours down from the heavens. The upward movement of the composition and radiant sky communicate revelation, unity, and spiritual awakening. Plate III – Lower scene The death of Ananias. Struck down for deceit, Ananias collapses before the apostles while onlookers react with shock and fear. The interior setting and concentrated gestures emphasize moral judgment and divine justice within the early Christian community. Together, these six scenes present a complete and visually compelling narrative of faith, persecution, miracle, and revelation. As a full surviving set, the engravings are particularly appealing to collectors of early religious prints, narrative print cycles, and Dutch Golden Age publishing. Condition report: Good condition overall. Light age-related toning and scattered spotting, mainly confined to the margins. Clear impressions with visible plate marks. No major tears or losses observed. Framing tips: Ideal for series presentation. Dark walnut or ebonized frames with generous ivory or warm off-white mats will enhance contrast and readability. The three sheets can be framed as a unified narrative set or displayed individually as paired scenes for flexibility. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Pieter Mortier, Amsterdam, circa 1700
