About the Item
Adoration of the Magi
Flight into Egypt, Pieter Mortier, ca. 1700
Original antique engraving from Histoire du Vieux et du Nouveau Testament, published in Amsterdam by Pieter Mortier around 1700. The plate presents two central episodes from the infancy of Christ, finely engraved in the baroque style that characterized Mortier’s monumental illustrated Bibles.
The upper scene depicts the Adoration of the Magi (Matthew II, 1–12). The three wise men, richly dressed and bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, kneel before the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, who radiates a halo of light. Joseph stands nearby, while attendants and soldiers observe from the background. The setting is framed by grand architecture with columns and arches, emphasizing the majesty of the event and its significance as a recognition of Christ’s kingship.
The lower scene illustrates the Flight into Egypt (Matthew II, 13–15). Joseph leads the donkey on which Mary sits holding the infant Jesus, guiding his family across a rugged landscape. The engraving captures a sense of both hardship and divine protection, as they move through a wilderness with mountains and palm trees in the background. This moment reflects the Holy Family’s escape from King Herod’s persecution, contrasting with the reverent stillness of the adoration above.
Mortier’s engravings combine narrative clarity with dramatic baroque settings, intended to bring biblical history to life for a broad audience. His Amsterdam editions of the *Histoire du Vieux et du Nouveau Testament* were among the most influential illustrated Bibles of the early 18th century, valued for their artistry and devotional impact.
Condition report:
Very good condition. Strong impression with wide margins. Light toning and faint foxing at the edges, minor handling marks consistent with age. Central images remain sharp and detailed.
Framing tips:
A cream or ivory double-aperture mount will emphasize the two scenes while preserving the unity of the plate. A walnut or dark wood frame enhances the engraving’s strength, while a gilt frame can elevate the devotional and decorative qualities of the composition.

The Gift of the Magi: An 18th C. Religious Engraving by Vale, After Calmarat
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a very rare early 18th century old master religious themed engraving entitled "Les Mages...Trouverent l'Enfant avec Marie sa Mere, et se prosternant entere ils l'adorent Puis ouvrant leurs tresors ils tuy offrirent pour present de lor de l'encens et de la myrrhe" by S. Vale after Calmaret, published in Paris by Pierre Drevet (1663-1738). The scene depicts the Magi bowing before Jesus, who is held by his mother Mary, and bringing him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to demonstrate their adoration and respect. Winged cherubs fly overhead and a ray of light is focused on the spiritual couple. A cattle stall and buildings are in the background and a crown and scepter are dropped in the foreground, symbolically demonstrating that these nobles place Jesus above their titles and rank. Little is known about the artist Calmarat or the engraver S...
