About the Item
Created after an original india ink gouache on paper by Pablo Picasso from September 22-23, 1955. Numbered 534/2000 in pencil in the lower left and stamp signed by Pablo Picasso.
Most intriguing about this work is the stunning coloration and quality of the bright, periwinkle blue that highlights the right side of this bacchanalian composition. We are focused on the grandeur and celebration of wine and its god, Bacchus who is basked in this bright, soothing light. We see the profile of a flute player on the left, providing the harmonious song which our characters dance wildly and happily to. It is a lush portrait inspired by Greek mythology that Picasso has elegantly and delicately created; the swift, quick strokes add detail to shading and the hair of our figures, while thick, bold lines help anchor them within and set them apart from the background.

Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the best-known figures in 20th-century art. The total number of artworks he produced has been estimated at around 50,000.
