About the Item
19th-Century Costume Prints – Mount Cenis Costumes and Nursing Scene, 1835
This delightful pairing of two hand-coloured antique prints from 1835 captures the traditional costumes and daily life of the Mount Cenis region. Published by J. Dowding in London and illustrated by the talented R. Bridgens, these prints are part of the well-known series “Illustrations of the Manners and Costumes of France, Switzerland and Italy.” Bridgens was celebrated for his ethnographic detail and his ability to bring cultural subjects to life with a combination of historical accuracy and artistic flair.
The first print, titled “Costume of Mount Cenis,” shows a vibrant encounter between a local mountaineer and a young woman carrying a basket of fresh produce. The man’s attire is rustic and practical, with sturdy gaiters and a walking stick, while the woman’s yellow skirt, bright red bodice, and large hat reflect the region’s distinctive folk dress. The landscape setting, complete with a single evergreen tree, suggests the high mountain environment of the Mont Cenis pass, which was a vital trade route and a place of cultural exchange.
The second print, “Nursing, Second Costume of Mount Cenis,” offers an intimate domestic scene. A mother, dressed in a traditional apron and headscarf, tends to her child by the hearth. The hearth glows with the warm fire of a copper pot, and the backdrop of religious iconography hints at the piety and family values of the era. The mother’s protective stance and gentle care illustrate the quiet rhythms of family life in a rural Alpine setting.
Together, these prints form a charming visual narrative of the Mount Cenis region – from the social interactions in village life to the tender moments of the home. Hand-coloured with bright, earthy tones, these prints reflect the 19th-century fascination with local customs and the beauty of regional dress.

Title: French Regional Costumes – Bretons, Parisians and Savoyard, c.1845
This charming mid-19th-century hand-colored lithograph illustrates the regional diversity of traditional French costumes, taken from the rare Parisian publication Le Monde en Estampes: Types et Costumes des Principaux Peuples de l’Univers, issued around 1845–1850. The lithograph was executed by J. Bocquin after drawings by Fossey, printed by Lemercier in Paris, one of the most respected lithographic ateliers of the century. Published by Amédée Bedelet, this series presented detailed portrayals of national and regional dress from across Europe and beyond, accompanied by text by Élisabeth Müller.
The composition, labeled “Europe – France,” presents an elegant gathering of figures from various French provinces. In the foreground, a Breton couple walks proudly in their regional attire—he in a broad-brimmed hat and embroidered vest, she in a richly colored dress and traditional lace cap. To their left, a seated woman from Caux wears a tall white headpiece, while another figure represents a Marin Maconnaise from Burgundy. At the center and right, mountaineers from the High Pyrenees converse with Parisians dressed...
