Alsace Folk Costume, Griesheim, Traditional Dress, c.1875 This striking chromolithograph depicts women wearing traditional costume from Griesheim in Alsace, distinguished by large black bows, layered skirts, and richly patterned textiles. The dramatic headwear and strong colour contrasts make this one of the most visually arresting plates in the series. Alsatian costume reflects a blend of German and French cultural influences, shaped by the region’s shifting political history. Kretschmer’s depiction captures both the decorative richness and the symbolic importance of the dress. Issued in Leipzig by J. G. Bach in the 1870s, the print belongs to a landmark series documenting European regional costume with both scholarly and decorative intent.
