About the Item
These high-quality prints are by Winold Reiss (1886–1953), a German-American artist famous for his portraits of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana. This set of six is part of a larger series originally commissioned by the Great Northern Railway to promote tourism at Glacier National Park.
Winold Reiss was a renowned modernist and muralist who spent decades documenting the Blackfeet people. His work is celebrated for its realistic, dignified portrayal of indigenous subjects, focusing on character rather than stereotypes. These offset lithographs were reproduced from Reiss's original pastel and tempera paintings. They were part of a high-quality portfolio titled "Blackfeet Indians of Glacier National Park," released c. 1940.
The portraits feature prominent tribal leaders and members in traditional regalia, including intricate beadwork, quillwork, and feathered headdresses. Notable subjects in this series often include Two Guns White Calf, Wades In The Water, and Chief Short Man.
These are high-fidelity, vintage lithographs known for their vibrant "army green" and earth-toned palettes that accurately capture the texture of Reiss’s original pastels.
