About the Item

18th Century Anatomical Back Muscle Study with Shovel Academic Engraving German c1745 This finely executed academic engraving depicts a standing male figure seen from the back, rendered with exposed musculature and holding a shovel as a stabilizing prop. The figure is shown in a subtle contrapposto pose, allowing for a clear study of the back, shoulders, spine, and gluteal musculature, while also demonstrating balance, weight distribution, and bodily mechanics. The plate belongs to an influential series of anatomical studies published in a German edition around 1745, based on the artistic principles and figure designs of Gérard de Lairesse (1641–1711). De Lairesse’s approach to anatomy emphasized idealized proportion and classical harmony, making these engravings essential teaching tools in European art academies throughout the 18th century. They were intended for painters, sculptors, and draftsmen rather than medical practitioners. The engraver’s precise line work and carefully controlled cross-hatching articulate each muscle group with clarity and depth. The subtle shadow cast behind the figure enhances spatial definition without distracting from the anatomical focus. The shovel, a recurring motif in this series, serves both as a compositional anchor and as a visual aid for understanding posture and leverage. This plate functions equally well as an instructional image and as a powerful decorative object. It is especially appealing to collectors of Old Master prints, academic figure studies, classical anatomy, and to interior designers seeking intellectually rich imagery with timeless visual impact. Condition Good antique condition. Original laid paper with light, even age toning. Minor scattered foxing and faint surface marks, primarily in the margins. Slight edge wear consistent with age. Strong plate impression clearly visible. No major tears or restorations observed. Framing tips A dark-stained wood or black frame complements the graphic strength of the engraving. Use a generous off-white or warm grey mat to emphasize the figure and preserve the academic aesthetic. Museum or UV-protective glass is recommended. Technique: Line engraving Maker: After Gérard de Lairesse, German edition, circa 1745
