About the Item

Ancient Egyptian Reliefs Hieroglyphs, Denon Voyage Egypt, 6 Engravings 1802 This cohesive set of six copper engravings originates from Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte, published in Paris in 1802 by Didot and drawn by Dominique Baron Vivant Denon. Produced directly after Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign, Denon’s publication represents the first major visual and scholarly achievement to emerge from the expedition and laid the foundations for European Egyptology. Note: The engravings are offered unframed, enabling custom framing to personal or interior preferences. Attached image is sample only. The plates focus on ancient Egyptian relief sculpture, hieroglyphic inscriptions, ritual scenes, and symbolic imagery, presented in a systematic and analytical manner. Figures of deities, priests, and rulers appear alongside architectural elements, funerary objects, and narrative relief panels. Several plates isolate individual relief scenes or hieroglyphic groups, while others combine multiple vignettes to illustrate ritual practices, iconography, and symbolic systems. The emphasis is not on dramatic scenery, but on clarity, structure, and faithful recording of the monuments as they appeared at the end of the 18th century. Denon worked from direct observation during his thirteen-month stay in Egypt (1798–1799), often sketching under difficult conditions. His drawings were subsequently engraved on copper by leading French engravers, resulting in crisp, restrained plates that balance artistic elegance with scientific intent. Unlike later Romantic interpretations, these engravings reflect Enlightenment ideals of documentation, comparison, and classification, making them historically significant as well as visually compelling. As a set, these six plates read as an intellectual ensemble, offering insight into ancient Egyptian religious life, symbolism, and visual language. They are particularly appealing to collectors of early archaeology, Napoleonic history, and Egyptomania, while also functioning beautifully as a refined wall installation for interiors that favor scholarly depth and graphic restraint. Condition report: Overall good antique condition. Light age-toning and scattered spotting consistent with early 19th-century laid paper. Occasional minor surface marks and small marginal imperfections may be present. Plate marks visible on all sheets. No major tears or losses; margins remain ample. Framing tips: This set works best framed uniformly, with generous ivory or soft parchment-colored mats to emphasize the original sheet size and the fine line engraving. Dark walnut, ebonized wood, or understated antique gilt frames complement the academic character of the imagery. Particularly effective when displayed as a structured 3 × 2 grid. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Dominique Baron Vivant Denon, Paris, 1802
