About the Item
Title: "Andean Condor (Male) - Majestic Vultur gryphus Illustration by Bertuch, 1805"
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving features the male Andean condor (*Vultur gryphus*), a species revered for its majesty and symbolic importance in South American cultures. Rendered in stunning detail, the illustration captures the bird perched upon a rock, exuding dominance and grace. The condor's impressive wingspan, textured plumage, and iconic bald head with a prominent comb are meticulously depicted, showcasing the artist's eye for anatomical accuracy.
Accompanying the condor is a skeletal ram’s skull, adding a dramatic and symbolic element that highlights the bird’s role as a scavenger and a vital part of the ecosystem. The engraving comes from Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s celebrated *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1805. Bertuch’s work sought to educate children with an ambitious combination of art and natural history, spanning over 12 volumes with over 1,200 engravings.
The Andean condor, native to the Andes mountain range, is one of the largest flying birds in the world and holds cultural significance among indigenous peoples as a symbol of power, freedom, and the connection between heaven and earth. This engraving not only serves as a scientific study but also as a celebration of this majestic bird.
Condition Report
The engraving is in good condition, with minor foxing and age-related toning. The edges exhibit slight wear consistent with its age.
### Framing Tip
Choose a dark, ornate frame to enhance the drama of the illustration. A deep black or dark green mat would accentuate the condor’s striking features while preserving its timeless appeal. This piece is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts or collectors of fine antique ornithological prints.

"Washington Sea Eagle": An Original Audubon Hand-colored Lithograph
By After John James Audubon
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original John James Audubon hand-colored royal octavo lithograph entitled "Washington Sea Eagle", No. 3, Plate 13, from Audubon's "Birds of America". It was lithographed, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen and published in Philadelphia between 1856-1871. It depicts an adult male sea eagle perched on a rock.
This is an excerpt from Audubon's own description of this magnificent eagle, which includes how he came up with the name "Washington Sea Eagle":
"The name which I have chosen for this new species of Eagle, “The Bird of Washington,” may, by some, be considered as preposterous and unfit; but as it is indisputably the noblest bird of its genus that has yet been discovered in the United States, I trust I shall be allowed to honour it with the name of one yet nobler, who was the saviour of his country, and whose name will ever be dear, to it. To those who may be curious to know my reasons, I can only say, that, as the new world gave me birth and liberty, the great man who ensured its independence is next to my heart. He had a nobility of mind, and a generosity of soul, such as are seldom possessed. He was brave, so is the Eagle; like it, too, he was the terror of his foes; and his fame, extending from pole to pole, resembles the majestic soarings of the mightiest of the feathered tribe...
