About the Item

Anfiteatro Flavio detto il Colosseo – Antique Hand-Coloured View of the Colosseum (c.1840) This finely hand-coloured 19th-century engraving presents a clear and atmospheric view of the Colosseum, shown from an angle that captures both the surviving outer façade and the partially collapsed inner arcades. The artist emphasises the iconic rhythm of arches and tiers that define the ancient amphitheatre, while delicate hand-colouring brings out the warm ochre tones of the Roman stonework against a calm blue sky. Small figures near the base of the structure provide scale and situate the monument within its timeless setting. This type of Roman view was produced during the Grand Tour era for travellers seeking refined and accurate images of the city’s most celebrated antiquities. The engraving is distinguished by its balanced composition, crisp linework, and harmonious colouring, all enhanced by the generous wide margins that give the print strong decorative presence. Early hand-coloured architectural views of the Colosseum remain highly desirable among collectors of Roman antiquity, Italian topography and neoclassical travel imagery. Condition report: Very good condition. Clean image area with fresh, even hand-colouring. Light foxing scattered in the outer margins, not entering the printed surface. No tears, creases or repairs. Plate mark clearly visible. Wide, attractive margins. Framing tips: Ideal in a warm walnut, light oak, or antique gold frame that complements the earthy tones of the stone. A cream or soft ivory mat adds brightness and enhances the architectural detail. For a more modern display, a thin black frame with a white archival mat creates a clean contrast while maintaining the historic character of the subject. Technique: Hand-coloured engraving Maker: Anonymous Italian artist, Italy, c.1840
