Antique Bear Hunting Prints – Finland
Poland Forest Scenes – 18th Century
This rare pair of antique engravings presents dramatic scenes of bear hunting in Northern and Eastern Europe, capturing both the peril and ingenuity of traditional hunting methods. Each print is finely detailed, showing human confrontation with the formidable wild bear in densely wooded forest settings. Together, they offer a striking glimpse into regional customs and the symbolic importance of the bear in 18th-century Europe.
The first engraving, titled “Finlandische Bären Jagd” (Finnish Bear Hunt), depicts a Finnish hunter face-to-face with a standing bear. The hunter, armed with a spear, advances toward the animal in a moment of intense danger, while the forest backdrop emphasizes the wild and untamed nature of the landscape. This scene reflects Finland’s long tradition of bear hunting, which carried ritualistic and cultural significance in addition to providing food and fur. Bears were deeply woven into Finnish folklore and mythology, often revered and feared as kings of the forest.
The second engraving, “De Beeren vangst der Polen” (The Bear Capture of the Poles), illustrates a more elaborate hunting method. Here, hunters have set a large net between the trees, ensnaring a bear that struggles against the woven trap. One hunter pulls the net tightly while another, armed with a spear, prepares to subdue the animal. In the background, additional hunters can be seen approaching. This image highlights the cooperative nature of Polish bear hunting traditions, where strategy and teamwork played as great a role as individual bravery.
Both prints date from the 18th century, engraved with remarkable attention to gesture, expression, and environmental detail. Executed in fine copperplate engraving, the works combine documentary value with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Enlightenment, when natural history and ethnographic subjects fascinated European audiences. Such hunting scenes were included in travelogues and encyclopedic works that sought to depict the customs of different nations, making these prints both historically and ethnographically significant.
Condition summary: Good condition. Strong paper with clear impressions and visible plate marks, folding lines as issued. Light toning and small scattered spots of foxing are present, consistent with age. No tears or repairs observed. Unframed.
Framing tips: As a pair, these prints create a powerful visual statement when displayed together. Black or dark brown wooden frames with off-white or light cream mounts will emphasize the strong contrasts of the engravings. For a warmer presentation, walnut or natural oak frames may be used, enhancing their rustic subject matter and forest settings.
