About the Item

Antique Berry Botanical Chromolithographs, Currants Wild Berries, Calwer 1854 This attractive set of four original mid-19th century botanical chromolithographs was published in Stuttgart in 1854 under the direction of Dr. Calwer. The plates depict a variety of berries and small fruits, including currants, brambles, strawberries, and related wild species, shown with leaves, blossoms, and fruiting stages in carefully balanced compositions. NOTE: The prints are offered unframed, allowing the buyer full freedom of framing choice. Each sheet combines scientific observation with decorative clarity. Delicate white blossoms, finely veined leaves, and clusters of red, black, and blue berries are arranged to illustrate the full botanical life cycle of each plant. The palette is fresh yet natural, dominated by layered greens offset by vivid fruit tones, giving the set both educational value and strong visual appeal. Produced using early chromolithographic techniques, the plates demonstrate nuanced color layering and soft modeling achieved through multiple stones. This method results in a tactile surface quality and subtle tonal depth that bridges natural history illustration and decorative wall art. The generous margins and uncluttered backgrounds make the prints especially well suited for framing and interior display. The sheets show visible signs of historical handling, including surface soiling and light dirt, most noticeable in the margins and lighter background areas. This wear is consistent with mid-19th century use and storage and has not been cleaned or restored. These traces of age contribute to the authentic patina and surface character of the prints, reinforcing their originality and period integrity. Importantly, the botanical imagery itself remains clear, strong, and visually engaging. As a cohesive group, these four plates form a refined natural-history ensemble ideal for kitchens, dining rooms, studies, libraries, or hospitality interiors. Complete berry sets from this period are increasingly scarce, and this group offers both decorative charm and historical substance for collectors and interior designers alike. Condition report: Good antique condition. Visible handling dirt and surface soiling, primarily in the margins and lighter background areas, consistent with age and historical handling. Light age toning and scattered foxing. Minor edge wear. No major tears or losses; imagery remains well preserved. Framing tips: Recommended in matching dark walnut or stained oak frames with generous ivory or warm off-white mats to unify the set visually and enhance the botanical detail. Museum or UV-filtering glass advised. When matted and framed, the handling wear largely recedes and reads as gentle toning. Technique: Chromolithography Maker: Dr. Calwer, Stuttgart, 1854 These are original 1854 chromolithographs and show authentic surface wear from historical handling. The prints have not been cleaned or restored, preserving their original patina and period character. Please review images carefully or contact us with any questions prior to purchase.
