Antique Biblical Engravings – Christ Walking on Water
The Canaanite Woman, Pieter Mortier, ca. 1700
This impressive copperplate engraving, published in Amsterdam by Pieter Mortier around 1700, presents two of the most compelling Gospel narratives. Executed in the Baroque style with strong chiaroscuro and dramatic movement, the sheet combines two separate episodes of Christ’s ministry, each underlined by themes of faith and divine intervention.
The upper scene illustrates Christ Walking on Water (Matthew 14:24–33). In a turbulent seascape, Peter attempts to walk towards Jesus but begins to sink in fear. Christ reaches out, grasping his hand in a moment of divine rescue, while the disciples look on from the boat amidst stormy waves. The dramatic treatment of the water and the gestures of both Christ and Peter capture the urgency of faith tested by doubt.
The lower engraving depicts the Meeting with the Canaanite Woman (Matthew 15:21–28). The woman kneels before Christ, pleading for the healing of her daughter. A small dog, symbolizing humility and perseverance, is placed in the foreground, echoing Christ’s metaphor of the “crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” Christ’s gesture, midway between teaching and granting mercy, emphasizes the universality of faith beyond boundaries of nation or creed.
This sheet was part of Pieter Mortier’s monumental illustrated Bible, one of the most ambitious Dutch publishing enterprises of its time, pairing scripture with grand copperplate imagery. These engravings offered not only visual devotion but also theological lessons through art.
Condition: Strong, clear impression on laid paper with full margins. Light toning and small edge stains consistent with age, not affecting the images. Verso blank.
Framing tips: Best preserved together as issued, with a vertical mount showing both scenes. A cream or light ivory mat will emphasize the fine linework, while a dark wood or black frame provides balance. A narrow gilt fillet may be added for a sacred accent.
