About the Item
Purple Sandpiper – Antique Bird Lithograph by John Gould, c.1832
This charming 19th-century lithograph features the Purple Sandpiper (Tringa maritima), rendered with precision and grace by the renowned English ornithologist and artist John Gould. It originates from his celebrated work Birds of Europe (1832–1837), a cornerstone in ornithological illustration that captured European avifauna in lifelike and artistic compositions.
The Purple Sandpiper is a resilient shorebird known for braving cold northern coasts where few other waders venture. Gould’s print captures it in its natural habitat—on a sandy, grassy shoreline, poised near water’s edge with fine feather detailing and subtle purples and greys in the plumage. The species is noted for its ability to forage among seaweed-covered rocks, even in harsh winter conditions.
John Gould (1804–1881) was not only an artist but a scientist whose work bridged empirical study and aesthetic beauty. His lithographs, often hand-colored, remain highly desirable for collectors of antique ornithology, natural history, and decorative prints. This particular image highlights his attention to environment as much as to the bird, placing the sandpiper in a gentle coastal setting evocative of the bird’s quiet endurance.
Condition report: Very good condition for its age. General age-related toning, with some binding holes and minor marginal tears outside the image area. These minor imperfections do not detract from its visual appeal. Please examine the image carefully.
Framing tip: A natural wood or driftwood-style frame paired with a cream or pale beige mat will accentuate the soft shoreline tones of this print. Ideal for study, hallway, or coastal-themed interiors.

John Gould
John Gould was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published several monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. Gould has been considered the father of bird study in Australia, and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed Darwin's finches played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species.
