About the Item

Antique Botanical Lithographs – Gasteria, Aloe Yucca – 1897 Description: A vibrant set of three chromolithographs from Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse (1897) by Edward Step, featuring striking succulent and desert flora. Plate 270 presents Gasteria verrucosa, with its mottled, fleshy leaves and tubular red-green flowers. Plate 271 illustrates the Tree Aloe (Aloe arborescens), a dramatic species with spiny foliage and brilliant scarlet flower spikes. Plate 272 depicts Silk Grass (Yucca filamentosa), highlighting its sword-like leaves and large creamy-white blossoms. These illustrations combine scientific precision with artistic beauty, capturing plants popular in late-Victorian horticulture for their exotic appearance and resilience. Ideal for framing as a set, they reflect the fascination with succulents and ornamental plants during the 19th century. Condition: Very good with only light age toning near edges, colors remain vivid and well preserved. Does not come with frame, but as three sheets only. Framing tips: This trio works beautifully together in natural wood frames with off-white or pale green mounts, enhancing the bold reds and greens of the illustrations. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Edward Step, London, 1897
