About the Item

Title: Antique Botanical Prints of Feather, Ribbon Quaking Grasses – c.1897 A charming set of three antique botanical chromolithographs from the late 19th century, depicting elegant ornamental grasses with scientific precision and artistic finesse. These plates feature Feather Grasses (Stipa pennata and Pennisetum longistylum), Ribbon Grass (Phalaris arundinacea var. variegata), and a variety of decorative meadow species including Quaking Grass (Briza maxima), Hare’s-tail Grass (Lagurus ovatus), and Hair Grass (Aira pulchella). The delicate rendering highlights the distinctive textures of the grasses: the soft feathery plumes of Stipa pennata, the bold striped leaves of Ribbon Grass, and the charming, nodding seed heads of Quaking Grass that tremble in the breeze. These prints capture both the botanical structure and ornamental appeal, making them ideal for collectors of natural history art as well as lovers of decorative botanical design. Such illustrations were originally created to document ornamental and wild grasses valued for their use in gardens, floral decoration, and landscape design. Their aesthetic qualities—lightness, movement, and texture—are beautifully conveyed through the fine chromolithographic process, with subtle shading and detail that bring the plants to life. Condition report: Very good condition with strong, clean impressions and vivid colors. Minimal age toning to margins, consistent with age. The frame is not included. Framing tips: These prints would look elegant when framed together as a triptych, using light cream or soft green mounts to highlight the delicate hues. Simple wooden or gilt frames will emphasize their antique charm and botanical detail. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Unknown, European, circa 1897
