Antique Chromolithograph of Coastal Dunes and North Sea Shoreline, ca. 1890 This atmospheric chromolithograph titled “Die Dünen” (The Dunes) offers a sweeping and evocative view of windswept sand dunes along a northern European coast—most likely the North Sea, given the vegetation, sky, and maritime activity depicted. Produced circa 1890, this print is an outstanding example of chromolithography, the most vivid color-printing method of the 19th century, used here to great effect in capturing the shifting sands, dramatic skies, and delicate hues of sea and dune grass. The scene is filled with life and movement: in the foreground, figures trek across sandy paths—some carrying baskets or windbreaks—perhaps locals or beachcombers.
