About the Item
Antique Dragonfly Prints, Neuropteres Plates 3
6, Copper Engravings, ca.1800
This refined pair of antique natural history engravings depicts dragonflies and related Neuropteres with exceptional clarity and elegance. Issued around 1800 for the Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle, the two plates—Neuropteres, Plate 3 and Plate 6—were engraved after drawings by Jean Baptiste Blanchard and represent the height of French scientific illustration at the turn of the 19th century.
Plate 3 presents three striking winged insects, including the Ascalaphe and Nemoptera, rendered with expansive, delicately patterned wings that create a strong sense of symmetry and openness. Plate 6 focuses on dragonflies, including the celebrated Agrion de Chine, combining a central, finely colored specimen with detailed anatomical studies. Together, the plates offer a harmonious balance between scientific precision and visual grace.
Both prints are copper engravings with original hand coloring, executed with remarkable finesse. The restrained palette of warm ochres, soft browns, and subtle greens enhances the sense of calm and refinement, while the generous white space around each composition gives the pair an airy, almost contemporary feel. When displayed side by side, the prints read as a coherent, intentional set rather than individual scientific sheets.
Originally produced as educational material, these plates were intended to illustrate taxonomy and morphology for scholars and students. Today, they are highly sought after for their decorative appeal. This pairing is particularly well suited for interior settings, working beautifully in living spaces, studies, bedrooms, or curated gallery walls where natural history meets understated elegance.
Matched pairs of Neuropteres plates in comparable condition and tone are increasingly difficult to assemble. Offered together, this set provides both visual harmony and strong decorative impact, making it ideal for collectors and interior designers alike.
Condition report:
Two original antique engravings with original hand coloring. Light, even age toning throughout, with minor spotting and soft handling marks consistent with age. Edges and margins remain intact. Overall a well-matched and visually attractive pair.
Framing tips:
These prints are best framed identically in slim blackened wood or ebonized frames, paired with wide ivory or soft bone mats to emphasize the delicate engraving. Museum or UV-filtering glass is recommended. Hang side by side with a narrow gap, aligned at the top, for a calm and elegant presentation.
