About the Item
Antique Dromedary Camel Engraving, Buffon Hand-Coloured Print Amsterdam 1769
This beautifully hand-coloured 18th-century engraving of the dromedary camel, titled Le Dromadaire, comes from the Dutch edition of Buffon’s influential Histoire Naturelle, published in Amsterdam by J.H. Schneider in 1769. Appearing as Plate IX in Tome XI, this elegant image was drawn by Jacques de Sève, Buffon’s primary illustrator, and engraved by C.J. Fritsch. It is one of the most graceful and sought-after camel plates produced in the Enlightenment period, capturing both scientific interest and exotic charm.
The composition presents the dromedary in full profile, standing against a soft desert landscape with architectural elements reminiscent of North Africa and the Middle East. De Sève’s delicate linework highlights the characteristic single hump, slender legs, soft expressive eye, and distinctive curve of the camel’s neck. The subtle, transparent hand colouring typical of Schneider’s Amsterdam edition enhances the warm ochre and sandy tones of the animal’s coat, blending harmoniously with the pale blue sky and muted desert background. As a result, the plate retains an atmospheric, almost serene quality that makes it especially appealing for display in living spaces, offices, or natural history–themed interiors.
Buffon and Daubenton considered the dromedary one of the most important domesticated animals of the ancient world, essential to the cultures and economies of desert regions. In the 18th century, Europeans were fascinated by the camel’s ability to thrive in extreme climates, and these early scientific engravings helped shape contemporary understanding of the species. The Dutch edition is renowned for its crisp impressions, generous margins, and superior hand colouring, making it one of the most collectible versions of Buffon’s animals.
More than 250 years old, this engraving remains remarkably fresh, with a strong plate mark and excellent detail. It works beautifully as a standalone artwork or paired alongside related Buffon plates such as the rhinoceros, elephant, buffalo, or antelope. Its warm palette and balanced composition make it a versatile decorative piece suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition report:
Very good for its age. Light toning to margins and minor scattered foxing typical of 18th-century sheets. Strong impression with clearly visible plate mark. Hand colouring bright and well preserved. No tears or repairs observed.
Framing tips:
This camel plate frames beautifully with an ivory or sand-coloured mat, bringing out the warm tones of the coat and desert landscape. A natural oak, walnut, or black frame enhances its refined look. For a more modern presentation, consider a floating mount to emphasise the plate mark and wide margins.
