Portrait of Pieter Dirkszoon Hasselaer – Amsterdam Alderman, Tirion 1762
This fine 18th-century engraving depicts Pieter Dirkszoon Hasselaer, an influential figure in Amsterdam's municipal government during the Dutch Golden Age. Hasselaer served as 'schepen' (alderman) and councilor ('raad') of the city of Amsterdam, a role of considerable civic responsibility in the flourishing commercial capital of the Dutch Republic.
The portrait is presented in an oval frame resting on a pedestal, emphasizing dignity and classical balance. Hasselaer appears in formal dress, with a wide ruff collar and somber robes typical of the period's civic officials. His facial expression is calm and resolute, reflecting the virtues of leadership, prudence, and public service.
Engraved in 1762 by Isac Tirion (1705–1765), a prominent Dutch publisher and engraver, this work likely formed part of a larger historical or civic portrait series commemorating notable Dutch statesmen and citizens.
