This elegant and atmospheric 19th-century Orientalist engraving depicts a group of Egyptian women gathered along the banks of the Nile, engaged in the daily ritual of drawing water. The scene unfolds with quiet dignity and balance: women in flowing robes move carefully over rocky ground, lifting and carrying large water vessels, while feluccas glide gently across the river behind them. On the distant shoreline, domed buildings and a crumbling hillside fortress complete the tranquil riverine setting.
The sheet originates from the important travel publication documenting the oriental journey of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria, with drawings executed by Heinrich von Mayr and explanatory text by Dr. Sebastian Fischer. Von Mayr’s refined observational skill is especially evident in this composition, which places human routine at the centre of the Orientalist narrative. Rather than military spectacle, the focus here is on daily life, labor, and rhythm along the Nile.

A wide ivory, parchment, or soft sand-colored mat will enhance the warmth of the paper and deepen the spatial effect of the scene. A dark walnut, black, or softly antiqued gilt frame will give the work a quiet museum presence. UV-protective glass is recommended.
