About the Item
Title: Antique English Botanical Prints – British Wildflowers
Herbs for Interiors c.1902
Description:
This harmonious group of six original hand-colored botanical plates originates from English Botany; or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, Third Edition, edited by John T. Boswell Syme and published in London by George Bell
Sons in 1902. The illustrations are after the celebrated work of James Sowerby and J.E. Sowerby, whose plates are prized for combining scientific precision with refined decorative balance.
The set presents a varied and visually engaging selection of British wildflowers and herbs, many familiar by both botanical and traditional English names. Included are Common Fool’s-Parsley (Aethusa cynapium), a parsley-like plant historically associated with cottage gardens and hedgerows; Common Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), widely known for its aromatic foliage and culinary use; and Mountain Meadow-Saxifrage (Seseli libanotis), a robust upland species with dense, rounded flower heads. The group continues with Sea Lovage (Ligusticum scoticum), also called Scotch Lovage, a coastal plant once gathered as a pot herb; Meadow Sulphurwort (Silaus pratensis), a slender meadow species with softly domed umbels; and Bald-Money (Meum athamanticum), sometimes known as Spignel, an aromatic mountain plant long valued in traditional herbal practice.
Each plate shows the complete plant alongside detailed studies of flowers, seeds, and structural elements, reflecting the botanical rigor of the period. The restrained palette of greens, soft yellows, and muted purples, combined with generous margins, gives these prints a calm, timeless elegance. They are particularly well suited to interior decoration, whether arranged as a coordinated grid or displayed individually, and complement classic, country-house, or contemporary interiors seeking a subtle botanical accent.
Keywords: antique botanical print, English botany, British wildflowers, Sowerby botanical, hand-colored engraving, fennel print, meadow flowers, botanical wall art, classic interior decor.
