About the Item
Antique engraving of Henley-on-Thames with bridge and church, Tombleson
This finely detailed antique engraving depicts Henley-on-Thames, one of the most picturesque and historically significant towns along the River Thames in Oxfordshire.
At the center of the composition is Henley Bridge, a five-arched stone structure spanning the river, completed in 1786 to replace an earlier wooden bridge. Its elegant Georgian architecture is faithfully rendered here, with its arches mirrored in the water and providing passage for barges and boats navigating the Thames. Beyond the bridge, the tower of St. Mary the Virgin Church rises prominently, anchoring the townscape with its medieval character.
The artist responsible for this work is William Tombleson (1795–1846), an English topographical draughtsman and engraver best known for his atmospheric views of the Thames, the Medway, and the Rhine.
His engravings, often accompanied by elaborate decorative borders, combined documentary accuracy with romantic artistry, appealing to both local pride and the fascination of foreign collectors with the beauty of English scenery. The engraving itself was executed by Smith, whose delicate linework and subtle shading emphasize both architectural precision and natural softness.
Published by Tombleson
Co. at 1 Paternoster Row, London, and printed also in Germany by Cenzbauer in Carlsruhe, this view was issued as part of Views of the Thames and Medway around 1832–1834, a period when such picturesque river scenes enjoyed great popularity.
The scene captures Henley as a bustling riverside community. In the foreground, a barge laden with goods moves steadily down the Thames, a reminder of the river’s importance for transport and trade. Smaller boats with oarsmen add liveliness, while elegant figures gather along the bank, suggesting Henley’s dual identity as both a commercial town and a destination for leisure. The careful hand-coloring, applied selectively, highlights clothing, foliage, and architectural details, giving depth and vibrancy to the image. The ornate border surrounding the main vignette is typical of Tombleson’s style, featuring swans, urns, shells, and floral ornament, alluding to themes of water, navigation, and classical beauty.
For collectors, this engraving offers not only a charming view of Henley but also a prime example of early 19th-century decorative topographical art. Its balance of picturesque detail and decorative design makes it appealing for display in libraries, studies, or interiors with an interest in English heritage and river landscapes.
Condition report: Very good condition with strong impression and bright, clean paper. Minor toning to margins consistent with age, but no major defects. Plate mark is visible, adding to authenticity.
Framing tips: This print would look refined in a dark wood or gilt frame with a cream or light ivory mat, which will enhance the decorative border and highlight the delicate hand-coloring. A double matting with a soft grey inner line would also provide a subtle contrast to the architectural details.
Technique: Engraving with original hand-coloring

Antique engraving of Windsor Bridge on the Thames, Tombleson, c.1832–1834
This detailed antique engraving depicts the old Windsor Bridge, a three-arched crossing over the River Thames linking Windsor in Berkshire with Eton in Buckinghamshire. The bridge was a vital crossing point in the early 19th century, carrying both pedestrians and traffic across the river. In this composition, the bridge is shown with a horse-drawn cart and several figures making their way across, while activity on the water and along the riverbanks brings additional life to the scene.
In the foreground, a barge with a furled sail moves slowly beneath the bridge, manned by boatmen engaged in their work. To the right, figures in brightly colored dress gather by the riverbank, one leaning on a pole near the water’s edge while others attend to daily activities. The houses and riverside buildings frame the view, adding to the sense of a bustling riverside townscape. The whole scene is animated by the interplay of people, architecture, and the flowing Thames, presenting Windsor as both a place of commerce and community.
The drawing is by William Tombleson (1795–1846), a leading English topographical draughtsman whose series Views of the Thames and Medway (published between 1832 and 1834) was highly admired for its combination of accuracy and artistic style. The engraving was executed by Charles Mottram...
