About the Item
Antique engraving of Philip I of Castile, “Philips de Eerste”, Netherlands ca. 1725
This richly detailed antique engraving depicts Philip I of Castile (1478–1506), known as Philips de Eerste in Dutch and more widely remembered as Philip the Handsome. Shown crowned and robed in state attire, Philip holds a scepter and rests his hand on a large sword, while the chain of the Golden Fleece hangs around his neck. His dynastic coat of arms appears prominently, underlining his authority as the first Habsburg monarch of Spain.
Philip was the son of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy. Through his marriage to Joanna of Castile, he became King of Castile and laid the foundations of the Spanish Habsburg dynasty. He was the father of Emperor Charles V, one of the most powerful rulers of the 16th century, making Philip a pivotal figure in European dynastic history.
The composition is framed in an elaborate architectural and ornamental border. At the top, a heraldic lion within a shield is surrounded by instruments of war, while the sides are decorated with suits of armor, helmets, banners, and military trophies. At the bottom, a grotesque mask flanked by weaponry serves as a memento mori, a reminder of the transience of earthly power. In the background, an architectural scene with courtly figures adds narrative depth to the portrait.
This engraving belongs to the tradition of printed series of rulers produced in the Netherlands during the early 18th century (ca. 1725). While the iconography derives from earlier Flemish portrait prints of the 16th and 17th centuries, such designs were reinterpreted and republished to satisfy continued interest in dynastic history and moral exempla of kingship. These engraved portraits were not only decorative but also served as historical illustrations in printed histories and compendia of noble houses.
For collectors of royal portraiture, Habsburg history, or Dutch engraving, this work offers both artistic richness and historical significance. Its large format and finely worked ornamental frame make it particularly suited for display.
Condition report:
Good condition with strong lines and well-preserved detail. Some light toning and scattered foxing, consistent with age. Minor handling marks but no significant tears or repairs. Short margins.
Framing tips:
The engraving would be striking in a generous cream or ivory archival mat to highlight the fine details of the ornamental border. A dark wood or black frame would provide contrast, while a gilt frame would underscore the regal subject.
