About the Item

Antique engraving portrait of King Louis XIII of France, circa XVII century This finely detailed portrait engraving depicts King Louis XIII of France and Navarre (1601–1643), one of the central figures of early modern French monarchy. The oval cartouche inscription reads “Ludovicus XIII Dei Gratia Galliae Franciae et Navarrae Rex Christianissimus, Natus Anno MDCI XXVII Septembris”, identifying him as Louis XIII, “Most Christian King of France and Navarre, born in the year 1601, on the 27th of September.” Louis XIII ascended the throne in 1610 after the assassination of his father, Henry IV, and reigned until 1643. His rule is remembered for the growing strength of the French monarchy and the political authority exercised by his chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu. Together, they worked to centralize power, curb the influence of the nobility, and establish France as a dominant power in Europe. The portrait presents Louis XIII in regal attire with a rich fur-trimmed cloak, a lace-edged ruff, and the insignia of the Order of the Holy Spirit, the highest order of chivalry in France. His composed expression and dignified pose reflect both his status and the Baroque portrait tradition of the 17th century. This engraving likely originates from a French or Flemish print series of monarchs, intended for collectors, libraries, or as illustrations in historical compendia. It recalls the style of engravers such as Jean Morin, Balthasar Moncornet, or Pierre Daret, though the precise hand is not signed on this sheet. Portraits of French kings were popular subjects, reinforcing dynastic legitimacy and cultural prestige. For collectors of royal portraiture, French history, or 17th-century printmaking, this engraving offers a strong historic and decorative appeal. It links directly to the Bourbon dynasty that culminated in the grandeur of Louis XIV, the “Sun King.” Condition report: Good impression, but tight margins, mounted on old paper. Minor age toning and a few light foxing spots in the margin. Small paper loss in the lower right margin near the plate edge. No modern repairs. Framing tips: Best suited to a traditional presentation with a cream or off-white mount and a gilt or dark wood frame, which will highlight the portrait’s rich contrast. A deep blue or burgundy wall color enhances its stately character. Technique: Engraving Maker: French or Flemish engraver after a contemporary portrait, circa XVII century
