Detailed mid-19th century engraving of Rio de Janeiro titled Rio de Janeiro – Palais Impérial et Cathédrale. The composition presents the grand square dominated by the Imperial Palace and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with its imposing twin towers. The busy foreground shows elegantly dressed figures strolling and conversing, alongside mounted riders and horse-drawn carriages, conveying the vibrancy of urban life in the Brazilian capital during the period.
Engraved by Ed. Willmann and printed by Ch. Chardon, Paris, this work belongs to a series of finely executed city views produced for European audiences. These engravings satisfied the 19th-century fascination with exotic and colonial locales, documenting both the architectural grandeur and daily activity of one of South America’s most important cities. At the time, Rio was the seat of the Brazilian monarchy and a central hub for transatlantic trade and cultural exchange.
