About the Item

Antique engraving of Windsor Castle on the Thames, Berkshire, Tombleson, c.1832–1834 This distinguished antique engraving presents one of the most celebrated views of the River Thames: Windsor Castle, the royal residence that has stood as a symbol of the English monarchy for nearly a thousand years. The composition is dominated by the castle’s imposing towers and battlements, which rise dramatically above the treetops and rooftops of Windsor, while the Thames in the foreground brings vitality and movement to the scene. On the river itself, boats of varying types animate the waters. To the left, a barge with a tall mast and red flag carries passengers, while smaller rowing boats and punts bring figures close to the viewer. One oarsman gestures towards the castle, his raised arm drawing attention to the regal fortress dominating the skyline. The balance of human activity and monumental architecture reflects the dual identity of Windsor as both a lively riverside town and a seat of royal power. The drawing is by William Tombleson (1795–1846), a British draughtsman renowned for his topographical works. His Views of the Thames and Medway, published around 1832–1834, was among his greatest successes, blending accuracy with romantic artistry. This plate was engraved by R. Sands, whose precise technique captures the masonry of the castle, the textures of the trees, and the reflective surface of the water with remarkable clarity. Published in London by Tombleson Co. at 11 Paternoster Row, with continental distribution in Carlsruhe, Germany, the series was intended for both British and European collectors, explaining the trilingual captions: English (Windsor Castle, Berks), German (Schloss Windsor), and French (Château de Windsor). The elaborate decorative border elevates the print into the realm of fine art. Scrolls of acanthus leaves frame the sides, while the top is adorned with a crest of flags, armor, and military trophies, emphasizing Windsor’s royal and martial associations. Such embellishments were a hallmark of Tombleson’s publications, transforming simple views into decorative works suitable for framing. Selective hand-coloring, applied after printing, enhances details such as the clothing of the figures, the flags, and the greenery, adding depth and atmosphere to the composition. For collectors, this engraving is a quintessential representation of Tombleson’s art and one of the most iconic plates in the Thames series. Windsor Castle’s enduring historical and symbolic significance makes this print particularly desirable, whether as part of a collection of English topographical views or as a stand-alone decorative work celebrating Britain’s royal heritage. Condition report: Very good condition with strong plate impression and fine detail. Paper is bright with only light age toning to the margins, consistent with age. Plate mark clearly visible. Framing tips: Best displayed in a gilt frame that echoes the royal theme, paired with a cream or ivory mat to highlight the hand-coloring and the ornate decorative border. A double mat with a deep red or regal blue inner line would enhance the association with Windsor’s royal heritage. Technique: Engraving with original hand-coloring Maker: William Tombleson (artist), R. Sands (engraver), London, c.1832–1834

Antique engraving of Windsor Bridge on the Thames, Tombleson, c.1832–1834
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique engraving of Windsor Bridge on the Thames, Tombleson, c.1832–1834 This detailed antique engraving depicts the old Windsor Bridge, a three-arched crossing over the River Thames linking Windsor in Berkshire with Eton in Buckinghamshire. The bridge was a vital crossing point in the early 19th century, carrying both pedestrians and traffic across the river. In this composition, the bridge is shown with a horse-drawn cart and several figures making their way across, while activity on the water and along the riverbanks brings additional life to the scene. In the foreground, a barge with a furled sail moves slowly beneath the bridge, manned by boatmen engaged in their work. To the right, figures in brightly colored dress gather by the riverbank, one leaning on a pole near the water’s edge while others attend to daily activities. The houses and riverside buildings frame the view, adding to the sense of a bustling riverside townscape. The whole scene is animated by the interplay of people, architecture, and the flowing Thames, presenting Windsor as both a place of commerce and community. The drawing is by William Tombleson (1795–1846), a leading English topographical draughtsman whose series Views of the Thames and Medway (published between 1832 and 1834) was highly admired for its combination of accuracy and artistic style. The engraving was executed by Charles Mottram...
