About the Item
Antique French Architectural Print Remise de Locomotives by Pierre Chabat c.1900
This antique architectural print, titled Remise de Locomotives, was designed by the French architect Pierre Chabat and originates from the celebrated series La Brique et la Terre Cuite (The Brick and Terracotta), published in the late 19th century to around 1900. The plate (Pl. XIV, 2e Série) illustrates a carefully designed locomotive shed, demonstrating the integration of structural utility with decorative brick and terracotta architecture.
The print features the principal façade, detailed floor plans of both the ground floor and first floor, and sectional as well as elevation views of the structure. The locomotive shed is presented as both functional and aesthetically refined, with polychrome brick patterns, truss-work, and chimney arrangements that exemplify 19th-century French industrial design. The combination of decorative architectural elements with the demands of railway infrastructure reflects the era’s emphasis on harmonizing beauty with practicality.
Pierre Chabat (1827–1892), a noted French architect and professor, was renowned for his research and publications on architectural ornament and construction techniques. His work in La Brique et la Terre Cuite highlights the versatility of brick and terracotta, widely used in industrial and domestic French architecture of the period. Today, plates from this series are highly regarded as decorative art prints as well as important historical records of architectural design.
This lithograph is of particular interest to collectors of industrial heritage, railway enthusiasts, and those interested in 19th-century French architecture. Its detailed plans and elevations also make it a valuable reference piece for architects and historians studying the intersection of engineering and architectural ornament in the railway age.
