About the Item

Antique French Architectural Print Villa Marguerite à Houlgate by Chabat c.1900 This antique architectural print, titled Villa Marguerite à Houlgate, presents an elegant seaside residence in Normandy, designed by architect E.M. Auburtin. The plate (Pl. XXVI, 2e Série) originates from Pierre Chabat’s renowned series La Brique et la Terre Cuite (The Brick and Terracotta), published in the late 19th century to around 1900. The lithograph illustrates both the entrance elevation and a longitudinal section of the villa, capturing its architectural layout and refined decorative details. The façade displays a symmetrical arrangement with steep gabled roofs, tall chimneys, and polychrome brick ornamentation that frames the windows and emphasizes verticality. A richly arched doorway with steps leading to the entrance is balanced by colorful ceramic tile friezes beneath the cornice line. The sectional view provides insight into the villa’s interior structure, showing the spatial organization of its floors and rooms. E.M. Auburtin, noted for his elegant seaside architecture, is represented here in collaboration with Pierre Chabat (1827–1892), a French architect and professor recognized for documenting the artistic and structural potential of brick and terracotta. Chabat’s series is celebrated as both a technical reference for architects and a decorative art project, with each plate demonstrating the versatility and beauty of French architectural design during the Belle Époque. This print is especially appealing for collectors interested in French coastal architecture, Belle Époque villas, or architectural decorative arts. Together with Plate XXV of the same villa (seaside elevation), this work forms a complementary pair, offering a complete architectural portrait of Villa Marguerite. Condition report: Very good condition with vivid color and strong impression. Light marginal toning consistent with age. Plate mark visible. No significant blemishes. Framing tips: Best displayed in a classic gilt or walnut frame with an ivory or cream mat. A subtle colored liner in green or blue may be used to echo the seaside setting and emphasize the decorative friezes. Technique: Lithograph Maker: Pierre Chabat, after designs by E.M. Auburtin, France, c.1900
