About the Item

Antique French Print Maison de Campagne by Bonnier Architecte, Chabat c.1900 Description: This antique architectural print, titled Maison de Campagne, illustrates a richly detailed design for a French country house by architect Mr. Bonnier. The plate (Pl. XLVIII, 2e Série) originates from Pierre Chabat’s celebrated architectural series La Brique et la Terre Cuite (The Brick and Terracotta), published in Paris in the late 19th century to around 1900. The lithograph presents a full cross-section of the house alongside detailed floor plans for the basement, ground floor, first floor, and second floor. The sectional view reveals the intricate arrangement of staircases, hallways, and interiors, capturing both the structure and the refined decorative elements of the period. Each plan illustrates the distribution of rooms, including vestibule, salon, dining room, library, bedrooms, and service areas, reflecting the elegance and practical functionality of Belle Époque domestic architecture. The *Maison de Campagne* embodies the architectural ideals of the French bourgeois country house: comfortable, well-proportioned living spaces combined with decorative refinement and structural ingenuity. The use of brick and terracotta highlights the materials’ versatility, uniting durability with rich aesthetic appeal. Pierre Chabat (1827–1892), French architect and theorist, published *La Brique et la Terre Cuite* to document exemplary uses of brickwork in architecture, offering both inspiration and practical guidance for architects and builders. This plate, engraved with precision by Spieghel after designs by J. Peau, remains a valuable reference for historians and collectors of architectural design. Condition report: Very good condition with clear impression and fine hand-coloring. Minor age toning near the margins, consistent with age. Plate mark visible. No major flaws. Framing tips: Best displayed in a dark wood or gilt frame with a wide ivory mat to emphasize the architectural detail. A thin burgundy or terracotta liner may be used to highlight the warm tones of the brickwork and plans. Technique: Lithograph Maker: Pierre Chabat, after designs by Mr. Bonnier (architect) and J. Peau (draughtsman), France, c.1900
