About the Item
Antique Fruit Chromolithographs, Pears and Apples, Set of Six, Calwer 1854
This complete set of six mid-19th century botanical fruit chromolithographs was published in Stuttgart in 1854 under the direction of Dr. Calwer. The plates form a coherent and visually balanced group depicting a range of pear and apple varieties, shown with careful botanical accuracy and a refined decorative sensibility characteristic of German chromolithography of the period.
NOTE: The prints are offered unframed, enabling custom framing to personal or interior preferences.
Each composition presents the fruit at different stages of maturity, often accompanied by foliage or blossoms, allowing for both scientific clarity and aesthetic richness. The contrast between elongated pears and rounded apples, combined with a restrained yet warm palette of greens, yellows, russet tones, and deep reds, creates a harmonious visual rhythm across the entire set. When viewed together, the six plates read as a unified ensemble rather than as individual studies.
Printed using early chromolithographic techniques, the images display subtle tonal layering and softly modeled surfaces achieved through multiple color stones. This method produces depth and richness that bridges the worlds of natural history illustration and decorative wall art. The open backgrounds and generous margins enhance the sense of space and make the set particularly well suited for framing.
The prints show visible signs of historical handling, including surface soiling and light grime primarily in the margins and lighter background areas. This wear is consistent with 19th-century use and storage and has not been cleaned or restored. Rather than detracting, these traces of age contribute to the authentic surface character and patina of the set, reinforcing its originality and period integrity. The imagery itself remains strong, clear, and visually engaging.
As a complete group, the set offers far greater decorative and historical value than the plates would individually. It is especially well suited to kitchens, dining rooms, libraries, wine rooms, or hospitality interiors where natural history subjects are desired with warmth, depth, and authenticity. Intact mid-19th century fruit sets of this quality are increasingly scarce, making this ensemble attractive to both collectors and interior designers.
Condition report:
Good antique condition. Visible handling dirt and surface soiling, mainly in the margins and lighter background areas, consistent with age and historical handling. Light age toning and scattered foxing. Minor edge wear. No major tears or losses; imagery remains well preserved and vibrant.
Framing tips:
Recommended in matching dark walnut or stained oak frames with generous ivory or warm off-white mats to visually unify the set. Museum or UV-filtering glass advised. When matted, the handling wear largely recedes and reads as gentle toning.
Technique: Chromolithography
Maker: Dr. Calwer, Stuttgart, 1854
Additional details: These are original 1854 chromolithographs and show authentic surface wear from historical handling. The prints have not been cleaned or restored, preserving their original patina and period character. Please review images carefully or contact us with questions prior to purchase.
