About the Item

Antique Ginger Botanical Print, Zingiber Officinale, c.1831 Description: This bold botanical engraving depicts Zingiber Officinale, the ginger plant, shown with its characteristic rhizomes, shoots, and flowers. Ginger was a cornerstone spice in both culinary and medicinal traditions and an important trade commodity between Asia and Europe. The plate comes from Zenker’s Merkantilische Waarenkunde and highlights the emphasis on usable plant parts, particularly the underground rhizome. The composition is visually strong and highly legible. Original hand coloring brings warmth to the rhizome and freshness to the foliage, making this plate especially attractive for modern interiors and kitchens. Condition report: Moderate age-related toning and scattered light spotting. No losses. Framing tips: A soft cream mat with a medium to dark wood frame enhances the earthy tones. Technique: Copper engraving with original hand coloring Maker: Jonathan Carl Zenker, Germany, 1831–1832
