About the Item

Antique Grape Botanical Chromolithographs, Wine Table Grapes, Set of Six, 1854 This impressive set of six original mid-19th century botanical chromolithographs was published in Stuttgart in 1854 under the direction of Dr. Calwer. The plates focus on grape varieties, depicting wine and table grapes in different stages of development, with clusters, leaves, tendrils, and flowering details rendered with both scientific precision and decorative refinement. NOTE: We are selling these prints unframed. Each sheet presents a carefully balanced composition, showing grapes in varied colors and forms, from pale green and golden varieties to deep blue-black and reddish clusters. Leaves are shown with distinct veining and subtle color variation, while stems and tendrils add linear rhythm to the compositions. Together, the six plates form a visually rich and harmonious ensemble that reads clearly as a unified botanical series. Produced using early chromolithographic techniques, the prints display layered color application and gentle tonal modeling achieved through multiple stones. This results in a depth and softness that bridges natural history illustration and decorative wall art. The restrained backgrounds and generous margins allow the imagery to stand out and make the set particularly suitable for framing in both classic and contemporary interiors. The sheets show visible evidence of historical handling, including surface soiling and light dirt, most noticeable in the margins and lighter background areas. This wear is consistent with mid-19th century use and storage and has not been cleaned or restored. These traces contribute to the authentic patina and surface character of the prints, reinforcing their originality and period integrity. The grape imagery itself remains strong, clear, and visually engaging across the entire set. As a complete group, these plates offer exceptional decorative and thematic coherence. They are especially well suited for wine rooms, dining rooms, libraries, kitchens, hospitality interiors, or vineyard-related spaces. Complete 19th-century grape series of this quality are increasingly difficult to find intact, making this set appealing to collectors and interior designers alike. Condition report: Good antique condition. Visible handling dirt and surface soiling, primarily in the margins and lighter background areas, consistent with age and historical handling. Light age toning and scattered foxing. Minor edge wear. No major tears or losses; imagery remains well preserved and vibrant. Framing tips: Recommended in matching dark walnut or stained oak frames with generous ivory or warm off-white mats to unify the set visually and emphasize the rich grape tones. Museum or UV-filtering glass advised. When matted and framed, the handling wear largely recedes and reads as gentle toning. Technique: Chromolithography Maker: Dr. Calwer, Stuttgart, 1854 Additonal Info: These are original 1854 chromolithographs and show authentic surface wear from historical handling. The prints have not been cleaned or restored, preserving their original patina and period character. Please review images carefully or contact us with any questions prior to purchase.
