About the Item

Antique Chromolithograph of Japanese Enamels – Sword Guards Ornaments, 1882 This richly detailed chromolithograph, Section VII, Plate VI, originates from the second volume of George Ashdown Audsley’s The Ornamental Arts of Japan, published in London by Sampson, Low Co. in 1882, with plates printed by the renowned firm Lemercier cie., Paris. The print showcases a remarkable selection of Japanese cloisonné enamel objects, executed with vivid coloration and exquisite detail. The composition illustrates seven pieces of traditional Japanese craftsmanship: 1. A species of dagger, beautifully ornamented. 2. A large tsuba (sword guard), decorated in cloisonné enamel. 3. The handle of the kodzuka (small utility knife often housed within the scabbard of a katana). 4. A kiri badge, a heraldic crest featuring the paulownia motif. 5–6. Sword guards of varying design. 5. Another smaller sword guard, delicately adorned. Each piece is rendered with precision, revealing the refined artistry of Japanese metalwork and enameling during the Edo period and beyond. Audsley’s *The Ornamental Arts of Japan* is celebrated as one of the most beautiful and comprehensive art books of the late 19th century. Its lavish plates cover painting, embroidery, textiles, lacquer, incrusted work, metalwork, cloisonné enamel, modeling and carving, and heraldry. With its finely executed chromolithographs, the work introduced Japanese decorative arts to a Western audience and remains highly sought after by collectors today. Condition report: Very good condition with strong, vibrant colors. Minor age toning in margins and light handling signs. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: A soft ivory or light cream mat will highlight the vivid enamels, while a dark wood or lacquered black frame echoes the Japanese aesthetic. A gilt frame may also be chosen to emphasize the richness of the chromolithography. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: G. A. Audsley, published by Sampson, Low Co., London; printed by Lemercier cie., Paris, 1882
